By purchasing from b, halfmoon on November 24th you helped us donate to Yoga Outreach. Thank you so much for your support! We are huge fans of Yoga Outreach and the work that they do to bring the benefits of yoga to underserved communities.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Yoga Outreach we asked them to share a little bit about who they are and what they do. Here is what they had to say:

Yoga Outreach

At Yoga Outreach we understand the depth and impact that traumatic experiences can have on the lives of people. More so, we recognize the spectrum of illness and range of strategies that individuals develop to survive and cope with traumatic experiences in their lives. We believe that to heal from trauma, people need opportunities to find safety in their bodies and build a sense of empowerment through an experience of personal strength, choice, and community.

Yoga Outreach is a non-profit organization whose mission is to expand access to trauma-informed yoga programs to heal and connect communities. We do this through providing trauma-informed yoga programming to social service centres such as mental health facilities, addiction recovery centres, prisons, and women’s Transitions Houses.

Every week we deliver yoga programming in 13 facilities serving over 6000 individuals recovering from substance-misuse, people living with mental health challenges, incarcerated women & youth, and women & children fleeing violence.

Our weekly trauma-informed yoga programs offer individuals an opportunity to heal from trauma by learning to reconnect with and feel safe within their bodies (a key element when healing from trauma), while also re-establishing a sense of social safety by participating in group classes within facilities they are already accessing and familiar with. Participants learn and practice techniques to cultivate safe and compassionate relationships with their bodies. They are empowered with choice, a sense of community connection, and tools to draw from to self-regulate and manage daily circumstances.

Yoga Outreach was founded 21 years ago, and in that time, we have provided over 50,000 people with access to yoga that would otherwise be out of reach. In addition to direct service delivery to vulnerable populations, we also provide trauma-informed yoga training for yoga instructors, train front-line professionals in yoga-based self-care, and offer ongoing mentorship, workshops, and community building opportunities to yoga teachers in their communities.

We know that together we can transform lives and make change possible.
